Guidance for evaluation of online sources
Evaluation of sources (“Quellenkritik) becomes harder when there are few sources, when a treatment/activity is not generally accepted or very new (for example, DIY-APS), and/or cuts into powerful business interests (for example, that entire cat food situation – people get very emotional about raw food).
I’ve learned that it’s a good idea to take everything I read or hear – from laypeople or experts – “with a grain of salt”/”in consideration.”
Life (as well as nutrition, the endocrine system, and diabetes management) is often complex, and I’ve found it helpful to distrust simple and broad answers – no matter the credentials of the speaker. Your experience may vary, of course.

Commercial off-the-shelf closed-loop systems and CGMs that might work for a cat
- Kitties and insulin pumps with tubes are a bad combination – from getting entangled and choked by the tubing to getting hit in the head by the pump, to chewing through the tubing, panicking when running away from it does not work … there are countless ways how this could go extremely poorly for the cat. Please don’t. Thankfully there are tubeless pumps …
- https://www.omnipod.com/what-is-omnipod/omnipod-5 – The Omnipod 5 system is bound to work for a kitty like Buddy without going DIY.
- https://www.dexcom.com/en-us – Buddy uses a Dexcom G6, but I think the new Dexcom G7 has some serious advantages (it’s smaller and thinner) – as long as it works with the O5 system.
- Based on what I am hearing (Hearsay …) – that’s probably what I would be doing if I had to start from scratch and if I had no supplies/DIY systems at home. I have NOT had an opportunity to use O5/G7 myself.
